KUKA OLET? //  TELL US ABOUT YOU?

My name is Mimmi Brunnsberg-Harrod and I go by the brand name Mimi Rockwell wich is an english version of my name. I live in Shellharbour, Australia 85 km south of Sydney Opera house with my Australian husband and our four year old daughter. I am a jewellery designer, graphic designer, illustrator and artist. I love creating, being outside, running and exercising, travelling and going on big and small adventures.

MITEN SINUSTA TULI SINÄ? // HOW DID YOU BECOME YOU?

That is a hard question. I don’t think Im done growing and changing as a person. But definitely living abroad, being open to change and adventures. And the humble and ”down to earth” approach to life must come from a happy childhood and playing a lot outside 🙂

MITEN SINUSTA TULI KORUSUUNNITTELIJA? //  HOW DID YOU BECOME A JEWELLERY DESIGNER?

I was on a little holiday in Amsterdam in 2005 when I walked into a bead shop. That shop was so beautiful and something just clicked in me. It was like love at first sight! I was incredibly inspired and I could have spent hours in that shop. I bought some beads and when I came home I started making jewellery. My collection of beads, charms, chains etc. grew to something phenomenal and my friends started buying jewellery of me. I also sold my designs in three different shops in Helsinki. When Matilda our daughter was born I stopped making jewellery. Designing jewellery with a baby and then toddler in the house was a little bit too challenging, she wasn’t a very helpful assistant. Im also an artist and for four years I concentrated more on my art than my jewellery. After moving back to Australia after three years in Finland I needed to do my own thing, to create something. In Finland I had a wonderful full time job and our daughter was in day care. When we moved back here in November 2017 my husband started working and I stayed home with our daughter. Because full time day care is super expensive here it was better to keep her home. It was so hard going from working full time to not work at all and I was extremely bored and frustrated. So in my mind I started creating and dreaming about a little brand that I would call Mimi Rockwell. And one day I sat down and designed myself a logo, business cards, web page and then I just started making jewellery again! Building my little brand and making jewellery keeps me happy and excited. And Matilda is now at the age when she doesn’t want to eat beads anymore so things are much easier now.

ASUT ULKOMAILLA, KERTOISITKO SIITÄ LISÄÄ? MITEN USKALSIT MUUTTAA POIS? ONKO OLLUT KOTI-IKÄVÄ? MITÄ KAIPAAT SUOMESTA JA MITÄ TOIVOISIT SUOMESSA OLEVAN ENEMMÄN? //  YOU LIVE ABROAD, WOULD YOU TELL MORE ABOUT IT? HOW DID YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO MOVE AWAY? WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT FINLAND AND WHAT WOULD YOU WISH FINLAND HAD MORE?

Im a person who loves change and adventure. I did some travelling during the years I studied (media) and enjoyed it so much that I decided to go to Australia on a work and holiday visa after my graduation. I met my husband in Sydney and since then we have lived together in Australia, Helsinki, Amsterdam and Turku. We moved back to Australia in November 2017 after three years in Finland. It was a massive move, going from a full time job that I loved in Helsinki to the unknown in Australia. My husband got a good job in Australia and it was time for a new chapter. I love Australia but I do get home sick and when we moved back here I went trough a terrible culture chock. Things are very different when you have a little child, I miss my family when Im here and its sad that our daughter is so far away from my parents. We did come back for the Finnish summer this year though and our goal is to go again next year. Other things that I miss from Finland is of course all my wonderful friends and of course some food like rye bread and Oatley´s iKaffe. The thing that I don’t miss from Finland are the grumpy and moody bus drivers haha! I guess what I would bring to Finland from Australia would be the easy going and open “no worries!” mentality.

MIKÄ INSPIROI SINUA? // WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

My biggest inspiration comes from nature, I love the ocean and everything tropical. We live only a few meters from the ocean here and we walk on the beach almost everyday collecting shells. Im also inspired by other things like the Greece mythology but also fashion and trends.

MIKÄ SINULLE ON ERITYISEN TÄRKEÄÄ TÄLLÄ HETKELLÄ? // WHAT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT TO YOU AT THE MOMENT?

First of all that my daughter and family are happy and well. It’s also very important for me to have the freedom to create, dream and do my own thing.

MISTÄ AMMENNAT TIETOA? //  HOW DO YOU GATHER INFORMATION?

When it comes to learning new skills and art & crafts methods , Youtube is amazing. I recently learned how to play the Ukulele by watching youtube videos. I also use Pinterest a lot for inspiration and new ideas.

ONKO SINULLA MENTORIA? //  DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?

Can’t say that I have. No mentor.

ESIKUVASI? //  YOUR ROLE MODEL?

I don’t really have a specific person that I call my role model but I do look up to people that are brave and talented. The Australian artist Jai Vasicek is pretty amazing and I have to say Tove Jansson and Astrid Lindgren.

PARASTA KORUSUUNNITTELIJANA OLEMISESSA? // THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A JEWELLERY DESIGNER?

I love the fact that I am free to decide what I create and how. There are no right and wrong, and no rules. In graphic design there are so many “you can’t do that” and it can be pretty frustrating.

ENTÄ VAIKEINTA? //  AND THE HARDEST?

I like to develop and come up with new ideas. Sometimes I get stuck and that can be frustrating.

MITEN KAIKESSA KIIREESSÄ JA HÄLINÄSSÄ PIDÄT ITSESTÄSI HUOLTA? // HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF IN ALL THE HASSLE?

I love running and being outside, and I have to say that designing jewellery is also some sort of relaxation. At the moment my life is “pretty cruisy” though and we have a pretty stress free life here.

MITÄ SANOISIT 18-VUOTIAALLE ITSELLESI NÄILLÄ TIEDOILLA MITÄ SINULLA ELÄMÄSTÄ NYT ON? // WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THE 18 YEAR OLD YOURSELF WITH ALL THE WISDOM ABOUT LIFE YOU HAVE GAINED TILL THIS MOMENT?

Follow your heart and intuition! Don’t let other people decide what you do with your life.

TULEVAISUUDEN SUUNNITELMASI? // YOUR FUTURE PLANS?

Grow my jewellery business, learn how to DJ, buy a hamster, stay happy and healthy.

LEMPIASIASI TÄLLÄ HETKELLÄ? //  YOUR FAVORITE THINGS AT THE MOMENT?

Summer is about to start!

INHOKKIASIASI? // AND THE LEAST FAVORITE?

The feeling of being trapped and dishonest people.

LEMPITRENDISI? // YOUR FAVORITE TREND?

If I could only wear one outfit for the rest of my life it would probably be jeans shorts and converse 🙂

KAMALIN TYYLIMOKASI? //  YOUR WORST SARTORIAL FAIL?

I used to have very short hair and being a pretty spontaneous person I always decided on the day that I wanted a haircut. I used to walk around the city asking for available times, and I always ended up in these “granny hairdressers”, the result was always pretty bad. Asking my dad to cut my hair was also a pretty bad idea.

PARAS TYYLIKOKEILUSI? //  YOUR BEST SARTORIAL EXPERIMENT?

Maybe I have to say my wedding dress that I bought for 10 dollars from an thrift shop here in Australia. It was perfect! 🙂

MITÄ ILMAN ET ARJESSA OSAISI OLLA? // WHAT WOULD YOU BE LOST WITHOUT IN THE EVERY DAY LIFE?

I am pretty addicted to my phone..unfortunetly…

LEMPIKOSMETIIKKATUOTTEESI? // YOUR FAVORITE COSMETICS?

I am really out when it comes to cosmetics. But I can give you a tip: baby oil is an amazing make up removal!

LIFE MOTTO?

A true visionary seems opportunity where the boring pessimists only sees fiasco!

LEMPIBIISI? // FAVORITE SONG?

Help this is a tricky one! But maybe my favourite song is Röyksopp’s “What else is there”, especially when I hear it here in Australia. I associate it with dark but magical Nordic winters.
